Welcome to the world

TATLER B-KULL: Lulu (Pocket´s Rocket) selvfødte fem valper mandag 22. oktober.

TATLER B-LITTER: Lulu (Pocket Rocket's) self-whelped five puppies on Monday 22. October. The litter consists of one dog and four bitches. All are black except for a brindle bitch. Their delivery was swift: The first puppy was born at 05:27 and the last at. 10:28 am. The puppies weighed between 224 and 242 grams, and have all presently (fourth day) gained weight well. Lulu is fortunately a good and capable mother. The litter´s sire is my beautiful boy Hamish (Sir Darnley's Undercover Urchin). This is his first litter, and Lulu´s second self-whelped litter. The boy is to be named Bryce here in the kennel, the girls will be Bryony, Brook, Berry and Bailey. In my last Blog-post in here you may find this litter´s five-generation pedigree, please scroll.

I hope all of you, my friends, cross your fingers for a bright future for this litter!

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
This litter´s sire; Sir Darnley´s Undercover Urchin, whom I have the great pleasure of owning, is from a self-whelped litter. He is out of the lovely dam Ch. Sir Darnley´s Rambling Ruby´s first of two self-whelped litters, bred by Maren Bichel-Schnock.

It´s the name of the game

Picking puppy-names is quite amusing, I think. I've had quite a few suggestions for names for my new B-litter throughout the last few days. Some of them more poetic than others. The ingenious proposals Beavis, Butthead and Borat were suggested by my brother and his friends, after they had been amusing themselves killing time on a weekend away last weekend, picking names they knew I simply would adore. Nice family and friends I have, right?

Why I love Sweden

Growing up in Norway I was always drawn to Sweden - the neighbouring country to the east. In my opinion the Swedes always had the upper hand in most fields, compared to the Norwegians. As a child my dad’s work often took him to Sweden, so when joining him on visits there I was exposed to Swedish culture and the nation’s mentality at an early age.

I loved their language (which undoubtedly is the most beautiful of the Scandinavian languages), their way of interacting, their service mindedness, their music, their television, their cars, their roads, their countryside and their cities. I suppose the Swedish way of life - though by no means identical - reminded me more of my homeland (UK) than Norway did. It still does today.

Throughout modern history Sweden has given the world an awful lot, especially when one takes into account that the country’s population is only around nine million. What do you think about this considerable list of world-renowned talent and success? Ingrid Bergman, Britt Ekland, Anita Ekberg, Dag Hammarskjöld, Raoul Wallenberg, IKEA, Ingmar Bergman, Marcus Schenkenberg, ABBA, Björn Borg, Volvo, Saab (Pre GM, naturally), Stig Blomquist, Ace of Base, Erik ”Carlsson på taket” Carlson and Roxette – and this list could go on and on…

Sweden is one of few countries Betty Penn-Bull mentions specifically in her book “The Kennelgarth Scottish Terrier Book”. In the paragraph called “Overseas Connections” she writes: “The Scandinavians seem to have a natural skill with animals, with their care and breeding. Scottish Terriers appeal to a number of breeders and exhibitors, perhaps particularly in Sweden, where there are numerous successful and dedicated enthusiast”. Betty was quite right in her description of the Swedes. Since the first Scottish Terrier was imported to Sweden, breeders there have - based on British bloodlines - refined the type and temperament of our breed. Compared to other countries (i.e. the UK and the US) what the Swedes have done for our breed is exceptional, especially considering that their top year for registrations was 250 (a small number compared to the UK and US) in the mid-70s, and that every single Swedish Scottie breeder has had an active professional live - in addition to breeding many important and outstanding Scotties. What an achievement!

When club chairman Dan Ericsson addressed the participants at the dinner party celebrating the Swedish Scottish Terrier Club’s 40th anniversary last month, he (rightfully) praised several of the guests for their longstanding loyalty to the breed. Many of the guests that evening had been club members since the club started. Dan went on to say that in the dog world Scottie fanciers are one of a kind – in as much as that they are totally faithful to their breed – which is uncommon in the dog world today.

Looking around the room at the dinner party I couldn’t help but ask myself how many of the club members present that evening would be attending the club’s 80th anniversary in 40 years time. (I’ll be 86 – so I certainly won’t be attending).

My point is: Where are all the younger Scottie breeders today? Will our breed be in the same situation as the Sealyham is in presently, in 40 years time? What can we do to prevent this from happening in Scandinavia, and globally?

I think we need to market our breed professionally – in new and untraditional medias and arenas. We need to actively generate more interest for our breed amongst the general public. (Who will cover the cost of this?) We need to dare to sell puppies to young first-dog buyers. (I don’t think we need more second or third-breed breeders, who love other breeds more. (Quite the fundamentalist, or perhaps even an extremist, am I not?). Some of these young new first-time owners, head-over-heals in love with their first ever Scottie, will be the future for our breed. As I already said: The breed’s future won’t be my hands – or anyone else´s over 40 for that matter.

The Zeitgeist of today’s world, where it would seem that every other person is, or has, a personal coach, indoctrinates us into thinking that the present is of utmost importance. In dog-breeding we know better. We look to the past when we plan to breed. And that’s why I, genetically, love Sweden. We want every next generation a little bit better - so the past is just as significant as the present for a conscientious breeder.

But what does the future have in store for our beloved Scottish Terrier?

Big hairy goals

I´ve got a copy of M:s Betty Penn-Bull´s (Kenelgarth) obituary, from Dog World, hanging in my grooming room. It was written by Catherine Owen, and also has three short obituary notices by Nellie Holland, Marina Guidetti and Nellie Taylor.

I understand, as you probably can appreciate, that I´ll never even come close to producing the results achieved by Betty Penn-Bull in my small kennel in the outback of Europe: But this sheet of paper gives me something to stretch for every time I enter the room. Big fat hairy goals are encouraging to me.

New Scottie journal

Hamish entertaining himself

My Scottie-posse brought back this old piece of black rope from a walk last winter. It´s been in the garden ever since. They love playing with it. Especially Hamish (Sir Darnley´s Undercover Urchin). He loves to entertain himself with it. It just goes to show that expensive dog toys from the pet shop are unneccesary - and certainly never last as long as this rope has!

My NMSTC-interview, with Maren Bichel-Schnock

- Please scroll for copy in English!

For the third consecutive year, Nellie Taylor (Wildermist), has asked me to make an interview with a prominent Scottie breeder for her club's (North Midlands) journal. This year was Maren Bichel-Schnock (Sir Darnley's) turn. The whole interview will be published in the journal this autumn, here is a little teaser for you:

Peter: Do you see any new trends in the Scottie world that you either like, or dislike?
Maren: At the moment there is more that I dislike, I’m afraid. I feel that we are running out of the real Scottish Terrier breeder personalities. Those people who live for the breed, with commitment to the development of our breed.

I love dog shows. For me they are the best possibility to compare my own dogs with others and also to see the development of the breed. Nowadays sometimes a spectacular presentation seems to be more important than quality and correct breed type. (...)

Vintage Scottie Thermometer

I promised you a photo of this vintage piece a few weeks ago. How time flies.

I found this unique old thermometer in an antique shop in Sweden when I was on holiday there a few weeks ago. Interestingly it´s both in the Celcius- and the Rankine scale. At least I think it´s the Rankine - it could also be the Römer- or Réaumur scale.

Rankine is a thermodynamic temperature scale named after the Glasgow University engineer and physicist William John Macquorn Rankine, who proposed it in 1859.

The symbol for degrees Rankine is °R. Zero on both the Kelvin and Rankine scales is absolute zero, but the Rankine degree is defined as equal to one degree Fahrenheit, rather than the one degree Celsius used by the Kelvin scale. A temperature of −459.67 °F is exactly equal to 0 °R.

Complicated, huh?

Rankine source: Wikipedia
